Well..... My wife and I took our youngest to new student orientation at University of Utah. I will say that if I could find a way to move out there, I would do it tomorrow. Salt Lake City is one of the nicest towns I've ever been to. Plenty to do outside and plenty of things to do at night with bars/restaurants.

We got in on 6/20. It was a long and brutal flight that included a 2hr on the tarmac stop in Houston with (3) screaming toddlers.... Anyway, we weren't in the mood for fine dining and took the closest thing to the hotel we could agree on: Redrock Brewing. The draft beers were OK (the standard Utah 4% stuff). I had their double IPA in a bottle and it was good. The food was your standard pub stuff and didn't merit pics. Worth a stop.

4% Pale Ale was OK.

Double IPA was WAY better.

We let the kid sleep some after the flight and hit the closest bar we could find: Beer Bar. This is a cool place with all the craft beers you can handle. A bunch of the 4% drafts, but also everything you want in bottles and cans. Neat little place right in the heart of downtown.

We had the University tour 6/21-6/22. We thought this would just be the kid solo, but they roped the parents into it. We ate some non descript stuff the school provided for lunch both days. They kept the students overnight on Thursday which allowed for me and the wife to do as we pleased. I wanted to check out the local BBQ since I'm a big fan. R&R was the top rated on Yelp and the closest to us so away we went....

The specials.

I had the burger.

Wife had the (2) meat special of pulled pork and brisket.

Sauces. None of the meats required this.

The people at this place understand good Southern BBQ. It was delicious. The only thing missing was legitimate sweet tea.

We needed to grab some beers after the BBQ so we hit Fisher Brewery. Our favorite brewery in Salt Lake. What a neat little place. We spoke with the owner at length. They don't distribute their products and can only get their swag and beers there. He wanted to create what he called a "neighborhood" brewery. They had food trucks outside and a crowd of people inside.

The pilsner on the left and the ESB on the right. Both were good.

The Fisher beer on the left (historical pilsner recipe) and the unfiltered pale ale on the right (easily the best 4% draft Utah beer of the entire trip).

Friday was more tour. We managed to get out of there at 10ish and take the trip to Snowbird. They have a restaurant at the top of the tram and the wife wanted just to grab something there. Expensive and not worth it. Do not do this unless you are just in a hurry and hungry. Snowbird is definitely worth a trip in the summer if you've never been. Hiking and the tram where well worth it.

The brewery tour continued Friday night. We hit Squatters for dinner. The pub food fare here was better than Redrock IMO, but still nothing remarkable other than it was good. The venue was great and the atmosphere was outstanding. 30 min wait on Friday night wasn't bad.

Was very good.

Was just ok.

Saturday was a great day to be a foodie in Salt Lake City. That morning the wife and I left the kid sleeping and went to breakfast at Penny Ann's Cafe. Wow. They might have the best pancakes I've ever had anywhere.

The pancakes.

The bacon, eggs, and skillet potatoes that came with it.

The cornbeef hash and eggs.

They tried to kill us with food. Holy crap! Do not come here unless you are ready to eat. The portions are huge and the prices are very reasonable. Their claim to fame are the pancakes and they come with everything on the menu (my cornbeef hash came with two).

Funny story...... We took the local transit everywhere that week. Penny's is in a not-so-nice part of town, but we took the bus and walked the two blocks to get there. Anyway, we are coming down a sidewalk and my wife gets charged by a dog chained to the front porch. Fortunately, the chain ends right before he gets to us. He's barking and raising two kinds of hell. Then this cute little Hispanic girl comes out of the house and in no uncertain terms, tells "Happy" to stop barking.

Saturday night. Our favorite place in Salt Lake City by far for fine dining: Log Haven.

This has to be one of the best settings and atmospheres for any restaurant I've ever been to. To top it all off, the food is outstanding. It's an old log cabin that is nestled at the foot of one on the canyons leading into the mountains. They restored it and turned it into a restaurant and wedding venue (they had a reception there the night we went). The pictures don't do it justice....

The restaurant and the base of the mountain.

View from our table of the waterfall.

My bacon wrapped Elk tenderloin and polenta.

My son's waygu, Colorado raised flank steak with mashed potatoes and brussles sprouts.

Dessert.

Moon setting over the mountain as we left.

They had a guy there playing piano who was awesome. The wait staff is top notch and professional. The prices are what you'd expect at about $40-50 per entree and $7-15 per drink. If you are ever in Salt Lake and want a true experience, you need to make a stop here.

Next time you visit him be sure to check out the Red Iguana for some mole. Some of the best I've ever had.

We've been there several times and like it a lot. Didn't have time for it this trip.

I'd have gone next door to Settebello for a pizza napoletana and some gelato!

I'm basically ruined on Mexican because of Red Iguana.

"Want to eat Mexican?"

"Are we flying to SLC and eating Red Iguana?"

"No."

"I'll pass."
