Rice Blended Into Tomato Bisque?

I just stumbled upon a recipe that calls for rice to be cooked in a tomato bisque before blending. In the video, the Chef mentioned that there are two mandatory ingredients in a bisque, cream and rice. I've never heard of rice being added to a bisque, but I could see how it could be used as a thickener.
Has anyone here used rice as an ingredient in a bisque and how do you like it?
Ironically, I've got a batch of rice that I added too much water to last night, so it would be perfect for this use if I get the nod of approval here.

Yelp, thickening is the first thing to came to mind. But, I am not sure I would do that.

I've never done it, but I've read about using rice or even tapioca. I think I've had bisques with the rice or maybe it was tapioca, though. They were obviously pureed, but you can detect the little bits if you look hard.
