TH03 is right. I am not talking about an overflowing pot. I fill the basket to the top with crawfish and sides and place it in the pot. Water is not an issue here people.
I forgot to check the size on the pot. I'll try to remember tonight.
Maybe my basket is a little undersized? It came with the pot, so I wouldn't expect it to be. There is about an inch or two between the edge of the basket and edge of the pot when the basket is placed inside the pot.

Well he literally said the basket was overflowing, not the water so I’m not sure how you came to that conclusion.

does not equal

30lb sack with average to above average amount of fixings
30 lbs sack of crawfish will not fill an 80 quart basket/pot to the top. And after they boil/sink, it will be, at max 3/4 full.
Again, I boil many sacks of crawfish - of all different sizes - in a 80quart pot/basket. All of the sacks typically have a couple packages of corn, shrooms, sausage, and a bag or 2 of potatoes.....with room to spare for 2 large frozen Mott Apple Juice jugs.
Something is wrong, OP... either your pot isnt 80qt or your basket isnt the appropriate size for an 80qt pot.

Correct. It has nothing to do with the water.
He’s either boiling more than 30 plus a metric frick ton of sides or his pot/basket is not 80 qt.

Acre of taters and a bushel of corn?
I boiled for years in a 100qt but it was overkill for 1 sack at a time. Here is a pic of a 80qt pot w appropriate size basket - so you can see if u have the right size basket for ur pot

Actually, he didn't literally say that. Regardless, there is no way 30lbs of crawfish is filling the basket for an 80qt pot.
My guess is he has a 40qt pot and doesn't realize it

You right, I said overflowing, he said the basket was 100% full.
Either way, it has nothing to do with the water level. He either has a pot smaller than 80 qt, or he’s boiling more than 30 lbs with a ton of sides.
Yeah 40 or maybe 60.

I haven't brought up water level since he said his piece about the basket.

Leave 5 holes visable in ur basket when u add water... will be plenty of room
This is how I do it.
Put basket in pot empty.
Fill water until it hits the 4th or 5th hole in the basket.
Works for my pot, no spills or messes to clean up. After a few times your pot will have a water line. Just go off that for future boils.

Thanks for the picture. Your basket seems to be a bit larger than mine, but doesn't seem like it would make that big of a difference either.

Yeah either your pot is smaller than you think (likely a 60qt) or you have a 60qt basket in your 80qt pot. I have the exact setup as bossfloss and 30lbs of crawfish with fixings ain't shite for my combo.

Welp, I just checked and it turns out I have a 60 quart pot. FML.
I think I’ll just go with an 80 or 100 qt if I’m getting a new one. Thanks for all the help fellas.

If you normally only do 1 sack, 80 is all you really need. The 100 will give you the option of doing 45-50lbs at a time. Take your pick.

I’ll probably get the 100. It’s only $20 more ish and it’d be nice to have the option to do a little more than a sack sometimes. I do 1 or 2 small boils a year and will sometimes do 45 lbs for those. It’d be convenient to do it all in one batch.
