Put a freshwater fish in salt water and see how long it lives. let me answer it for you.....not very.
It is the stupidest thing people do. Not many people know really know why they do it. They do it just because other people do it.
BTW: I cook the best crawfish known to man. every party i have thrown people say this. Just say.

purging with salt does very little in terms of "purging"
A scientific study has been done on this. No significant difference between rinsing in water or adding salt in the water. Its published but not by a peer reviewed journal

adding salt to crawfish before they are boiled is as dumb as adding it into the boil/pot/water.
ANY powdered seaosoning you can buy has more than enough salt included.
