Helping my son put together a pellet grill.. he bought a big bag of Bear Mountain Gourmet Blend pellets. The pellets smell like plastic or something. Maybe like the plastic bag they're packaged in... supposedly "no flavorings, fillers, or additives"...
I have no experience w/pellets, but shouldn't they just smell like hardwood? Did he get a old, stale bag of pellets?

Well, according to the ratings, Bear Mountain Pellets come out on top as the best ones to use.
I use a lot of pellets since I make my own sausages, bacon, smoked salmon, smoked cheese etc. and love them.

If you took a handful of your pellets and took a good whiff of them, do they smell a little plastic-ey?

I've used Bear Mountain a lot; however, I've never smelled them other than what comes out of the smokestack. Never had any issues with them.

Same here. I'm sure there are some adhesives, glues or chemicals used in the process of making the pellets so they hold their shape and are not just bits of dust and burn away in seconds.
If the OP is concerned about that, then he can opt to just use natural hardwood depending on his smoker type. Many times, depending on what smoker I'm using, I'll opt for hunks of pecan, oak, hickory that are soaked overnight in water so they smoke more than simply burn up.

Bear Mountain is all I use. Never smelled of them though. I can say they make a great smelling smoke
