The guy may be a jerk and his restaurants may be terrible but you don’t win that much money, trophies and world championship rings if you don’t know your business about smoking various cuts of meat. Most of these contest are judged by the blind box method with the exception of whole hog. I’m not sure how many of you have smoked pork with peach wood but that’s what Myron uses on pork. I once lived by a peach orchard in Ruston, LA growing up and it’s fabulous for smoking because it’s mild yet has a distinct taste. I much prefer peach over any other fruit wood that I’ve tried on pork but it’s hard to get. Myron also uses wagyu beef and has some guy that supplies him with cherry picked pigs that I’m sure are a notch above what you can buy in the store so right there the guy has a leg up on most of his competition.

That episode on chopped featured his arrogant son who is twice as abrasive as Myron yet he does not have the trophies, rings and cash won from these contest to back up all that bravado.

Confirmed in previous posts. However, I think its kinda shameful that someone with that much bbq knowledge and assets serves dumpy bbq at his eating establishment.

I’ve never understood celebrity BBQ types. Smoking meats ain’t exactly rocket science.

I went to a pop up lunch he had in Pensacola for a fundraiser in partnership with the BGE people. I wasn't impressed with the BBQ and felt the sides were an afterthought. Was disappointed. Luckily it was at Perfect Plain Brewing which made up for the low quality of food. He was all over the place pimping himself and the food.

I see your point and agree. If I was a celebrity pit master or chef I would want anything I owned or had my name associated with serving my patrons an excellent meal. And obviously you and everyone else on this board feels the same way. Having said this I guess the guy just doesn’t care and is only about the money. I once heard he holds seminars on how to grill and smoke meat. I’d be willing to bet that isn’t cheap. I would like to taste his offerings when he’s on his “A” game though long as I didn’t have to listen to his big fat arrogant mouth.

Competition bbq and restaurant bbq are two entirely different things.

They are... After hearing the thoughts of people who have eaten at Jack's Old South it sounds like Mixon should stick to competition.

That's putting it nicely. He even does that look where he raises one eyebrow and kinda tilts his head with a smirk when he's talking about "muh deddy, the great Myrn Mixin here at Jack's Ole Souf". Grates my frickin' nerves...

I'd be interested to hear Crawfish from Arabie's opinion of both and if he's had any dealings with either while on the circuit.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! This is a fact that seems to be confusing the hell out of this board. I'll start a new topic, and go into more detail on this subject. It really needs to be open for discussion.

I have met, and hung out with MM and his family a handful of times. He does come off as very arrogant, and unapproachable at first. Once you get to know him a little, he does loosen up and ends up being a pretty nice guy. He's very open to offering bbq advice, and does like to see other people succeed. What you see on camera is an exaggerated version of himself. His son, Michael, is as advertised. I had drinks with him and the other brother, David, at BB Kings one night this year at Memphis in May. Michael's vocabulary consists of: Daddy, the brand, Myron, world champ, the man, Daddy, Cabo Wabo, and Daddy again. David, on the other hand is actually an introvert. As odd as that may seem.
