Last night I went to a local restaurant having "$5 Martini Night Thursday." They do this every week but last night was the first time I went.

I ordered a "Martini, dirty". As a watched the bartender start making my cocktail, I noticed she was using vodka. After asking her if she had any gin she informed me that usually you have to specifiy a gin Martini as Martini's are "traditionally made with vodka." I should just left then, but it was $5 martini night.

For my second martini, not only did she once again try to make it with vodka, but she was out of olives and olive juice. I didn't know what to say at that point.

So I ask the FDB, would you contact the owner of said establishment to let them know that their bartender has no idea how to make the most basic/original cocktail which they have a special night for, and that on MARTINI night, she ran out of olives and olive juice? Or would you just let it slide?

I would not have been able to contain my laughter.

I went to a tailgate party before an LSU game put on by the lsu L club (the one where you have to be a former lsu athlete, fiancee, not me) and i asked the guy for a Mimosa. So he makes it, and i notice it looks different. I take a sip and its just champagne. Nothing else. SO i go back to him, and say, "hey i asked for a mimosa, this is just champagne" and he responds, "thats what a mimosa is, you have to ask for the orange juice extra". I kind of looked at him bewildered, and he took my cup without saying anything and poured orange juice in it.

He did the same thing to a buddy that was with me.

When I order I specify which liquor because they are both a martini.

And a well made one of either gin or vodka is one of life's great treasures.

Matter of fact in 24 minutes I'm going to make one in honor of this thread and sit on my front porch and watch the world go by.

I will do this in the future.

In the past, when ordering a martini, unless otherwise specified it is assumed to be a gin drink. I have ordered vodka martinis before, but I would never order a "martini" and expect it to be a vodka cocktail.

Well you are living in 2013 not 1965.

Churchhill drank gin. Bond drank vodka.

Me? I like em both.

Bond drank both - the Vesper is a combo of gin and vodka

Vesper

and I enjoy both as well. not trying to start something, guess my ignorance on the modern times fails me again.

Traditionally it's gin. Most bars use vodka these days that I notice due to the majority of the people expect its vodka.

Martini is right. You need to specify, but a good bartender should ask.

No, my point being the ignorance is of the modern generation.

I just made a second martini with an old bottle of my fathers Plymouth Gin that I inherited beyond his passing.

"May the daughter of your son smile up to your face."

Here's to you Pop.
