I've been down there for reasons I don't care to discuss. I didn't think I was coming back alive.

Well you sure don't want to cross that border these days. I was in El Paso a few weeks back and it's pretty hairy there as well. Laredo has changed a lot in the last few years as has El Paso. Used to cross the border without fear but no more.

That's what I hear. This was back in the late 90s and I was pretty young. Just this thought that I could disappear very easy
Felt the same way roaming around Belize City.

Mexico has always been a rough place. Sadly, rough has an entirely different meaning now.

Lubys quality is all about location, the best being the one by the Galleria in Houston.
As for Laredo, it's the only place I've ever seen a Wal-Mart with a line going out the door to get in the place, and check out clerks addressing me in Spanish.

They have one of those SuperHEB's or whatever they are called which is as big as a WalMart and built to give them a run for their money. It's a really nice store.

I go to Laredo for work once or twice a year. The town itself is impoverished and a shite hole, but just stay at La Posada and don't leave the property. You'll feel like you're at a fine Mexican resort and you'll meet some interesting people at the hotel bar.
I actually really like El Paso. Despite all the violent crime across the border in Juarez, El Paso is one of the safer cities for it's size. Their downtown area has been revitalized and there are a bunch of good restaurants. Not to mention, there are a ton of beautiful hispanic women that go to UTEP.

The Wal-Mart on Beach Street in Fort Worth, TX is a primarily spanish speaking location.
The greeter says "Bienvendios a Wal-Mart" for one

When we were in Laredo in 2000 when we went to this Luby's we crossed the border into Mexico to buy knock off goods amongst other things with no problem. But no way in hell I'd cross today.
When we went to San Diego for the Poinsettia Bowl in 2008, the first thing the Chief of Police told us when we got to the hotel was not to go to Tijuana. Yet we still had some morons go but they got caught and got sent home on a greyhound bus.

Reminds me of my house with the front porch back in College Station. I used to always look forward to Sunday's there on the porch because being across from the Presbyterians, we'd crawl out Sunday morning in our underwear, amongst 4 or 5 hundred empty beer cans, strap on a banjo and a guitar....and wait for the Presbyterians. We were waiting for em to come out of church. So we could sing them a little gospel music. Give em something to talk about on their way to Luby's.
