I went to La Mexicana to eat lunch today and the place was closed with lots of construction going on inside. There was a sign up about something else "coming soon."

If you're talking about the one off of Jones Creek, it's not closed permanently. There's a location in Gonzales, one on Jones Creek, and one (under a different name) on Siegen all owned by the same family.

Good, because I'd be pissed if it were gone.

Some of their stuff is good, but their chicken burrito is probably the most bland one I've ever had. In any case, I stick with Mi Pueblito because it's closer.

I live in P-ville, and have never gone to the one in Gonzales. I always end up at the one on Jones Creek (and that is the one I was referring to). Thanks for the good news! My wife and I ended up eating at La Reyna for lunch and were in a bummer of a mood thinking La Mexicana was gone for good. I really like their chips and salsa while waiting for my tacos.

Same here, was fiending for some mole chicken. I hit the taquerias up for breakfast a few times this week, got some Colombian food yesterday, but was in the mood for Honduran today. Someone needs to open up a Cuban restaurant here in the worst way.

There was a woman that was about to open a doughnut place on Highland next to the Varsity, but her son didn't want to run it. Consequently, they never opened the doors, and the realtors were only looking for $700 a month for the property (complete with the kitchen already being set up, since it had been a credit repair place in the past).

I spent a lot of time debating on opening up a Cuban cafe there, but never pulled the trigger. After a few months, Raoul was the one who leased the property.

One other TD poster I've met IRL has considered opening a Caribbean restaurant and lounge, I'd gladly become a silent partner.

Do some quality Conch fritters and chowder, as well as a good selection of jerk meats, and my kids and I can damn near pay your rent.

That was the other thing, I wasn't sure if some of the dishes would catch on here. The one thing that would be money in the bank is a good, authentic Cuban sandwich. One of my buddies had a mobile cooking cart that the owners of the Bayou let him plug in out front, he'd made Cubans all night and sell them to people as they left the Varsity.

I don't cook Jerk chicken or other Jamaican dishes, though. Another friend of mine had a jerk chicken cart out on Chimes street as well, he openly brings it out for LSU game days though.

Any more insight on the new place they're putting in at the La Mexicana II location? I see it's still under construction with "Coming Soon" signs up.

I sure will miss getting their salsa for lunch on work days.

Also, the nice lady who was always running the place was very sick. I heard she passed away. Any truth to this, and if I wonder if that has to do with the change?

I've gotten conflicting stories on what is happening with the place from some of the waitresses from the other locations.

I haven't heard that. I'll make my way to Mi Pueblito sometime this week and ask the owner.

I appreciate it. I managed to get most of my co-workers hooked on that place, and now it might be gone.

Talked to the owner tonight, that location is definitely closed for good. Another restaurant is going up there (not sure if it's a taqueria), but it's not from the same owners. She didn't really say why they closed, I didn't want to pry.

As much as you rave about this place, I'd assume that you had noticed that they've been closed for a while.

I didn't like driving out to Jones Creek, so I rarely went to that one, I stick with their sister restaurant on Siegen.

Mi Pueblito is much better, in my opinion. I honestly can't recall if the prices are any different from location to location, but Mi Pueblito has a killer deal on tacos ($1.50 per taco). Definitely one of my favorite taquerias.
