The bar above is still open. Restaurant IPO was awful. Too slow for the lunch crowd, too pricy for the bar crowd, and not good enough for the dinner crowd. Hopefully, it will be replaced with a restaurant that knows its location and who they need to market to, oh and makes good food.
As for downtown needing apartments, several hundred units just opened this year with several hundred slated to open next year.
Downtown's chugging right along. A bad restaurant going under is no sign of bad times.
Downtown doesn't need more restaurants, just better ones. Not more bars, just better ones, but the recent announcement regarding changes to Roux House and Lucy's are troubling for sure.

How so?

I like the Roux House. It's not douchy, crowds are cool, has ok bands, and good drink specials, plus it's a cool name.
I don't like Lava Cantina. Their food is not good and the music they book is often cringe-inducing.
I can take or leave Lucy's.

Agreed. Lava Cantina sure has some lofty goals. We'll see how they do downtown.

Bland was fricking terrible the one time i went.
I haven't been terribly impressed in the past, either. I don't know what changed, but I've noticed a marked improvement in the last... let's call it eight months?

It's former iteration, Wine Loft, was awful too.

Lava is horrible! Everytime I've been to Perkins Blowe location, place is empty! Must be selling something else to afford their rent there......

She has a weird and short post history.
Always pimps Gino's on here along with the Station. She hates on the Affliction crowd, which ironically is what has been at the Station for years.
And she always uses a bunch of !!!!!!!!!!!!

Good to know. This is critical. Lots of progress has been made, but the downtown area is in a rut over the last year or so. IBM seems like it's been a mess, where are the new units?

Most of the new units that were immanently coming are open and occupied, I want to say it was about 200 units combined for Commerce Building and IBM Building. Onyx is close but I think that's only 28 or so units so that won't make much of a dent.
Next big one is River House on Nicholson with 224 units I think. Those aren't quite downtown (in the traditional sense), but downtown is the closest entertainment and service area. I have a feeling the impact of that will turn Tin Roof into a weekend day-drinking hangout (it does ok already in that regard). These units are walking distance to Tin Roof and biking distance to downtown (via the safe route - the levee).

Yeah, that isn't downtown. Oh well. Hopefully a developer will add more units downtown in the next couple of years. It's been a while since I've been down there on a weekend, but during the week at night it is pretty depressing. Fingers crossed.

I don't know. I haven't been to Roux House in ages, but I like the idea of putting in a gastropub in the space. Swapping Lucy's for Lava Cantina is pretty much a wash food-wise. We used to go to Lucy's when it first opened for cheap tacos on Tuesday nights, but the food just wasn't good. I don't go to Lava Cantina that often, but it seems like the food has gotten better every time I've been there. It's mediocre, but that's a big step up from where it was at the beginning.

What do you feel slowed down its momentum?

The only "bigger" thing I know of is ~150 units on the corner of Florida/5th that hasn't come close to breaking down yet.
I think the current population (~2-3k people) are enough to provide the necessary seed to bring downtown up to speed on the dead nights, it's now up to the businesses to make that happen.
This is especially true considering the hotels/business travelers providing 500 or so people per weeknight of people that will eat out and/or become bar patrons in the downtown area. I think getting Marriott branded hotels downtown will help this further.
An example of trying to fill a dead night is Happy's on Tuesdays with running club. That pulls in 200-300 people willing to claw to downtown during rush hour on a Tuesday and deal with parking. As a result, Happy's can now print money on a Tuesday!
