One important ingredient to being "able to cook" is the ability to time accurately when each component of the meal is done.
A meal needs to be played like a golf hole, from the green to the tee and not the opposite.
If you want to experience what not to do, eat any holiday meal at my inlaws.

How does a person not know how to boil water?
She got the water to boil, but she couldn't cook the pasta from the box of mac and cheese to save her life. It was either hard or mush.

Worse things can happen. Lucy wanted to fry some bacon. So, she put a half quart of oil in a pot and put the burner on highest heat (like a deep fry for fish). When it started to smoke she threw in a 12 oz. rasher of bacon. There was an explosion.

I'm starting to understand why you just make her chicken salad for every meal. (It was chicken salad, right?)

Chicken salad, Monjuni's and pasta, French bread and butter and Brookshire's fried catfish.
