I know...very specific question. I want to maximize the amount of jamb I can cook in my 9 quart cast iron dutch oven. I usually do a 3 cup rice jamb, and have done a 4 cup rice jamb in it. I can't remember how full it was for the 4 cup jamb, so has anyone ever done 5 or more cups in a dutch oven of that size?

Hit the Jambalaya Calculator.

Tab to the right (By Pot Size - Small Batch). You can enter the size of your pot in quart increments and desired fill level.

It’s pretty damn great. Shout out Stadium Rat.

Anybody play with the desired fill level? I imagine, the higher you set the fill level, the harder it is to roll the rice from bottom to top.

Is there a % I shouldn't go over for the reason above?

Is there an update to the jambo calc? It gets by but it kind of sucks as an app in general and seems really outdated. Not sure if I have an old version.

I've never gone over 85% to be safe. I think there is room for more based on 5he results, but it's close enough to not be a huge difference in 5he finished quantity.

Just came to report back that the calculator was fairly accurate. I did 6 cups rice and probably had more than the recommended meat and vegetables. I had the jambalaya calculator set to 83% full but the pot was probably 90-95% full with very little room to do any stirring...but I was able to work around that.

Thanks again all.

Not sure of your rice to meat ratio but I cook a 3:1 jambalaya. Three pounds of meat for every one pound of rice. That's a real meaty jambalaya. What do you use?

My ratio was close to yours. About 2.5:1 meat to rice, but that's just what the jambalaya calculator recommended.
