How long do you wait in a drive thru to place your order if they don't ask immediately?

If I stop to eat while on a road trip and there are a ton of other options or I can wait for the next town, I'll just leave if I'm sitting there for ~30 seconds to order, especially if there is only 1 or no other cars in front of me. If they can't take an order down promptly, I'd hate to see what's going on in the kitchen.

If I found myself at a fast food place(I don't eat much fast food except on a road trip) and there is no one in line I am leaving after 15 seconds.
I have kids so if it's drive-thru fast food it's Chick Fil a and I don't think I have waited more than a few seconds.

CFA and Canes have always been great experiences for me in drive thrus. One time I had CFA not put the sauces I asked for in the bag, but it's partially on me for not checking before I left.
I only do drive thrus generally on trips both short and long. Experiences going to Popeyes, Taco Bell, etc. are usually never great.

45mins for a popeyes chicken sandwich. The life long friends I made while we all sucked on car fumes made it all worth it.

Even worse is when you start ordering and they’re out of half of what you want. Stopped at a sonic in Montgomery (wasn’t looking to check any knuckles) and ordered what my boys wanted and they were out of corn dogs. So I changed it to a burger. Ordered a BLT for my wife and they’re out of bacon. She changes to something else. Then they’re out of onion rings and cheese sticks. I just drove off. Ended up at the Prattville Cracker Barrel.

I don't go to the drive through. It's faster if I just go inside because everyone wants to use the drive through lane. Sometimes I just use an app and it ready when I arrive, but I usually forget about the app in advance.
