Is it just me, or do all holidays meals kind of suck? I feel like most people have gotten better at cooking turkeys and their prime ribs do that the main dish has come along way (or atleast it has in our household), but the meal as a whole always sorta sucks IMO because of the sides.

I get that it’s hard as no one wants to do a ton of cooking day of and there’s usually travel or a potluck component as you’re going to a family member’s house, but the overall meal always seems to suffer. We, as a household, are all pretty good cooks, love fresh, ready-made meals, but on the holidays (atleast the winter holidays) we sit down to a table full of these pretty eh casseroles as everyone makes stuff ahead of time to bring over.

How do we remedy this? Do y’all have any go-to recipes that are a good blend between easy to make but not mushy casserole? Really looking for ways to improve future holiday meals and could use all the help y’all may have!

The sides are my favorite part. We're a small family though so most things aren't really made ahead and they aren't transported.

I'm with LL here. Can't remember a holiday meal I didn't like.

My Christmas feast story:

Way too many years ago, when I was maybe 6, one of the aunts, who was not a cook, brought a sack full of Jack's 15 cent hamburgers to the Family Christmas feast at the Grandparent's farm house in Isola, MS. The other aunts thaought it was an abomination against southern cooking. I had never had a 15 cent Jack's hamburger and saw it as a Christmas Miracle addition to the feast. It is almost 70 years later and I still remember the Joy I felt.

Merry Christmas everyone! May all of your casseroles on the feast celebrating our Lord's birth be as tasty as the intent when they were cooked.

I am the exact opposite of you. My family doesn’t do prime rib, and turkey sucks balls. I don’t care how well the turkey is done, they all suck. It’s an extremely lackluster main course bolstered by strong side dishes. Wanna fix holiday food? Get rid of the turkey

The turkey comment was for thanksgiving. We always do a standing rib roast or prime rib for Thanksgiving.

I guess it’s just me, but I never love casseroles. If folks loved them this much, we’d eat them more often, but I guess I’m in the minority.

Well I do agree that we should eat holiday casseroles more often, but to be fair.. they’re much more steps than “regular” sides so it makes sense a lot of people don’t do them regularly.
