HOW CAN I GET A MES TO STAY AT 150?

Trying my hand at making smoked sausage. Instructions say to smoke at 150 for 5 hours. My electric smokers lowest temp is 170.
Any tricks to maintaining a lower temp?
I was thinking the following:
A hot plate inside the cabinet attached to a temp controller
Water pan filled with sand or something of the sort as a heat sink
Or maybe a few lit charcoal briquettes with some wood chips.
Thoughts?

If nothing else works, how about opening the door every 30 minutes or whatever it takes to lower the temp. Also wouldn’t think the 20 degree difference would make too much difference but I’ve never made my own sausage.
