Brewed up my Pilsner yesterday. My mash efficiency came in really high. Not sure why. Possible my sparge was very slow. OG was supposed to be 1.049, but ended up 7 points higher.

The West Coast haze IPA I made is tasting great already. Seems to have maintained the aroma.

Are your hops still in pots? I planted mine last Thursday. They haven't sprouted out of the ground yet, just wondering if yours have been moved to beds and if they are growing.

Also, my lager started fermenting within 24 hours, which is very quick compared to my other lagers. Also the first time i've used Saflager 34/70. I rehydrated 3 packets and pitched them in there. Fermenting temp is around 52.

5 out of the 6 rhizomes sprouted out of the ground. i moved 2 into the spots in the ground, and left the rest in pots.

I need to find spots for the rest. i can maybe plat 1 or 2 more but ill have to get rid of the rest.

It's Alive!!!

1 shoot already going. The rain on wednesday really woke up everything in my yard. The grass is much greener, my trees all have buds (except the ginkgo) and my hops are starting. This is the only bine that is pushed through the mulch. However, i have seen at least 5 or 6 other tiny sprouts. Looks like nothing more than the beginning of a weed (actually could be for all i know). I think i'll get the pergola started this weekend for the hop bines. THinking about ordering a few more just to make sure i have stuff growing.

My hops are started to throw up some shoots. 6/9 have popped up from the ground. 1 other has some shoots but are still underground, and i can't find 2 of the rhizomes i planted. Thinking of maybe ordering more or may just wait and see what happens and supplement next year if nothing comes up.

CarRamrod, are you cutting back the bullshoots? One of my cascades is about 9" tall now (that little guy pictured above) and the literature says to cut back the bullshoots, but i don't want to chance cutting the only shoots growing. I guess i'll talk to Yakima about that.

In other news, my Italian pilsner is finished fermenting. I measured the gravity and tasted it. I still get a tiny hint of diacetyl so i'm going to give it 2 more days before i begin crashing.

And my tilt hydrometer is WAY OFF. Tilt is reading an FG of 1.002, meanwhile the hydrometer read 1.012. There is some krausen hanging out on top of the hydrometer which may be causing the tilt to sink lower. I'm wondering if waiting until active fermentation slows might be better before adding the tilt for more accurate measurements.

How much was the tilt off on your OG?

Has it shown at least the gravity curve then flatten off?

4 points on one batch, and 3 points on another. And yeah, the gravity curve is shown. As other reviews have said, it's best for gauging time for fermentation steps as opposed to wanting to know your gravity.

I forgot to mention you can eat the new hop shoots. The shoots you would normally not let grow but instead snip them off. I put them on sandwiches or in a salad. They have a kind of bitter, spicy taste. Here is an article describing different ways to eat them.

Which ones do i snip off? I don't want to snip off the ones that are tall, i'm afraid they won't come back.

You pick two to let grow and snip the rest. I have shoots come up all spring and summer that I don't need.

I have about 15 to 20 shoots right now. I need to pick 2 and eat the rest. I just pinch off the tip and eat it.

I haven't. Are you supposed to? I only have 1 or 2 coming from each rhizome right now

Well shite...My measely 1 shoot is not all that impressive anymore.

Luckily, i ordered some more rhizomes to supplement the ones that didn't sprout.

Hey Zapp, you think my bines will have trouble reaching the twine based on my picture?

I read a few places it said to do so, but i've also read that it isn't necessary. Year 1 you shouldn't expect a big yield anyway.

Well, mine are a few years old.

It should work, especially by the 2nd year. The first year is just about establishing the plant.

so i have 2 in ground and 2 in pots..... can i transplant the ones in ground if i want to move their location next year?, how well do they grow on a wood fence. like can i let them grow up a fence post then down the fence? or is it better to be twine?
