I haven't posted in a while so i figured i'd update the fellow homebrewers.

My first beer was a Cincinnati Pale Ale from Palmer's How to Brew. It came out very nicely, and will brew this one again when i get the chance. I have pictures from my first bottle i opened to the last beer drank out of that batch (2 days ago). After fermenting for 2 weeks and bottle aging for 6-8 weeks for that last beer, the last one was the best. There is a noticeable difference in clarity, and taste. Definitely a Brew to brew again.

Brew #2 is again from Palmer's How to Brew. It is the Port O' Palmer. A porter that resembles sierra nevada porter. I've tasted it, during gravity readings, and it has a very similar taste to the original. It will be ready to drink Thursday and i'm sure it will be good.

Brew #3 is a Samuel Smith Nut Brown Ale Clone from AHB. I will be bottling from my secondary today. And I have high hopes for this as well.

My upcoming plans are:

German Altbier
Oktoberfest
Surly Furious
Fat Tire Clone
Magic Hat #9
Oatmeal Stout
and Another American Pale Ale

I've read up on extract, but it still sounds too technical for me at the moment, so i'll stick with extract brews for the time being.

If you figure out the Magic Hat let me know. I have tried it before with no luck. I know they use extract and not puree for the beer but I used a puree and it didnt work out. I should order ingredients today so i can brew over the weekend. I need to start bottling and kegging so that I can make more beer.

You will find the last bottle or last glass from the keg is always the best of the batch.

Yeah, i had that last bottle sitting in my brew freezer the whole time. So it stayed at about 67 degrees.

I find that keeping them at 65-68 until right before you want to drink them, makes them taste better. Maybe its just a mental thing.

Oh, question. I need to pick up a few beers (for research) what has the better selection, Marcello's or Cuban liquors. I've never been in Cuban liquors.

The best is to drive a little further to Calandros on Perkins/Siegen. I havent been into Cuban's either but I have never been terribly impressed with Marcello's. Albertson's may have a better selection than that place.

I'm just tired of their selection.

I agree that Calandros has a better selection than Marcellos and I also have not been to Cuban (since it has been opened again as Cuban). I'd like to know which Albertsons is better than Marcellos though.

One other spot you might check out is Mathernes (Perkins and Bluebonnet)....Might not be quite the quantity that Calandros has, but I could swear I have seen some nice beers there that are not at Calandros.

Oh and I can probably vouch for the others on the board by saying, go to the Calandros on Perkins, not Government.

Question: I am moving at the end of July. How much movement could my wort take in the fermenter. I'm only moving about 5-10 miles away.

The reason i ask is because i want to brew REALLY bad right now.

How are you tired of their selection? How much beer do you buy that you cannot find something new at that place?

You have plenty of time between now and the end of july to brew a beer and have it ferment out before you move. Realistically though it wont make a tremendous amount of different if you are careful with it. You may want, just for ease of moving to get it out of the fermentor though.

Marcello's has some international stuff that you cannot find at Albertsons but I have always thought that the store at burbank and bluebonnet and then the one at airline and old hammond had pretty good domestic selections.

I know there are new beers there. I just can't find what i'm looking for.

And i had a phase before i started homebrewing and doing p90x, where i'd spend 50 bucks a week over there.

Yea that is a bunch. Outside of the Cove I am not sure if there is a better beer selection in town though. So if you cannot find it there it may not be available in LA.

Yeah. But i have been disappointed at some of my favorites that aren't there. Stone Levitation Ale, Sam Adams Noble Pils, Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout.

They probably still have 12 packs of noble pils. (it is a seasonal though) and I'm almost positive that they have oatmeal stout. They have a pretty decent selection of sam smith

Cuban doesn't have anything the other places don't offer. Marcello's is always the same it seems like.

Martins gets a few different things. I picked up a Baladin Nora by Birrificio Le Baladin (Italian) at martins a couple of weeks ago. I've never seen that anywhere in BR.

Kegging issue: I need new "beer line" (from keg to dispenser) 3/16" ID and I'd really rather not have to order it online. Does anyone know of a source in town that I can get "food grade" tubing like that?

I asked at the DS Homebrew shop and he told me I needed larger tubing. Yeh, right.

I asked on a home brew forum whether I could use the tubing found at Ace Hardware, etc, and I was told the pressure may be too much. 10-12psi?

C'mon guys, give me an answer I can believe.

I believe some Lowes tubing is food grade.

That said, the main reason for food grade is dealing with passing hot liquid though it leeching in chemicals into the liquid. You wouldnt be passing hot liquid though this line.
