I was given a 2L whiskey barrel from "Redhead Barrels" that looks just like this

I've found plenty of information on how to go about the curing process, which I hope to start this week.

Once I'm finished with the cure, what would be the best liquor to start with? It came with 2 20ml bottles of "Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey" essence. I'm still not sure how these are used.

Does anyone have any beginners tips? I've never done anything like this before. It seems like it's hard to mess up, but I'm sure someone here has some pointers.

Thanks in advance for any help!

In small barrel, it’s really not possible to make aged whiskey out of white dog (unaged whiskey distillate)

My suggestion is to make a cocktail using the barrel. Just don’t forget it can only be the ingredients that don’t need refrigeration

Ideas: Aviation, Sidecar, Corpse Reviver 1 or 2

I have a barrel and did not go the "creating whiskey from moonshine" route. I use mine as a novelty, to store the whisky I drink as mixer on a regular basis, which happens to be Jack Daniel's. So, I fill it with JD and pour my Jack and coke and other mixed drinks using it. It does impart a coloring difference at first, but in the end with turnover, it loses its aging ability. There is a process by which you can burn the inside, but again, does not accomplish anything long term.

If it sits empty or half empty for extended periods of time, you will have to deal with leaks and re-hydrating.

As to your question, you would use a cheap distilled clear spirit and add the "essence" to it in order to flavor it like bourbon. You may also need to water it down if using moonshine.

so you do a neutral alcohol like vodka, add flavoring and let it sit in the barrel for a month?

These review/comments/probably will help you

I purchased the Red Head Liquor Flavoring Kit as a Christmas present for myself… The product was shipped fast with excellent and unexpected updates provided by Red Head Customer Service. Everything was well packed and if you follow the video instructions, you will be aging whiskey in less than a couple hours. My barrel cured within 1 hour and I mixed my first batch. Within 10-days, my bourbon was ready to drink and tasted as good if not better than anything you can buy in liquor stores. I am letting this batch age a few more days to be sure. I like the videos and several product options. I really like the fact this is a Veteran Owned business. I will be back for more stuff very soon. Thanks and God Bless!"
