Heavily Oaked Chardonnay.

Need some help. I don't drink a lot of wine, but have guests coming, one of whom likes a heavily oaked chardonnay. Someone told me that Cakebread has a real good one, but the cheap version is $45. Trying to keep it around $ 20.
Also need a good non-Australian Shiraz/Syrah(are those the same?)

Because they are from Australia and live in the Hunter Valley which is home to hundreds of wineries. They have had it all when it comes to Australian. And frankly, we don't get any of that stuff here.
So maybe something they haven't had.

Syrah and Shiraz are generally the same grape except that the Shiraz is a much bolder wine. You can get single varietal Syrah or more commonly in a Rhone/GSM blend.

Good suggestion. I'll throw Frei Brothers & Fritz into the hat for chardonnay. Both are from Russian River Valley and great for the price.

On the Shiraz/Syrah issue, they may find it interesting having a American version. Washington and Oregon make some great Syrah for $20 or so. I would look for one of those or ask the wine seller at your favorite store.

Head to whole foods and speak with their guy. Plenty of good choices for under 20 bucks.
