After opening in May 2024, Habaneros in Perkins Rowe, known for its modern decor, spicy margaritas and extensive taco menu, has closed for business.

In its place, a popular New Orleans chain, Tacos Del Cartel, will be opening, the restaurant posted on its social media.

"Born in New Orleans, expanding to Baton Rouge. Tacos del Cartel is more than a restaurant — it’s a celebration of culture, flavor and tradition," the restaurant posted on Instagram. "Perkins Rowe, we can’t wait to welcome you to the family."

Tacos Del Cartel has not announced an official opening date for the restaurant location at 10155 Perkins Rowe, near Anthropologie. The chain is also opening locations soon in Metairie at 2901 David Drive, and in West Palm Beach, Florida.

The Tacos Del Cartel menu features rib-eye guacamole, crawfish bisque, red snapper and octopus ceviche, bone marrow wagyu tacos, pan-seared cauliflower, churro baskets and more.

The Mexican restaurant will also serve a new brunch menu at their Baton Rouge location, featuring signature breakfast items like French toast, acai bowls, huevos rancheros, steak and eggs and breakfast tacos.

these mexicans must get tax cuts or something. They open restaurants and shut down after a year and open back up with another name in the same place right after.

I was there last weekend. Our server said that tacos del cartel owned part of habaneros and exercised some sort of option to buy out habaneros from Perkins rowe. They wanted a spot in Baton Rouge and just figured it was easier to take this one over. 3 week shutdown to let them do some renovations inside to add more tables.
