It was blind judging. It was basically The Chimes vs TJ Ribs...and the TJ Ribs seafood gumbo had sausage in it.
For the people's choice I voted for "The Chimes." I didn't like the fact that TJ's had sausage...but, TJ's had a really cute server :) S

I was there. Took 3rd(out of 3
) in the amateur division and 3rd in the overall/crowd favorite.

Yeah...but didn't you supply the "Potato Salad?"
It was great.

Yes, and why did you put it in quotes?
Glad you enjoyed it.

Ha..I didn't even think about it. It is because of "those on the board" that are opposed to Gumbo/Potato salad mix.
It was all good...I wish more people would have went.

Mike and NikNike are in the doghouse for not showing today. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
Sorry about that Jambo. I've been up with family at the hospital all weekend. My grandmother had surgery and is in recovery.
I REALLY wanted to do this thing. Just real bad timing. Next time for sure.

No sweat bro, just giving you a hard time. She's in our prayers, and looking forward to meeting you next time.

Thanks... She's battling it.
And I really wanted to meet you guys, cook, and talk food. Next time for sure.

First off I want to thank all the contestants for coming out and cooking. The gumbo was delicious and a good time was had by all. To those not there we had 3 contestants in 3 divisions - pro seafood (1st-Chimes, 2nd-T.J. Ribs, 3rd-GoYaYas/Beauvoir Park), pro sausage (1st-Jambo, 2nd-Chimes, 3rd-JR), amateur sausage (1st-BC, 2nd-Coon, 3rd-jeepfreak). The people's choice for seafood was: 1st-T.J. Ribs, 2nd-Chimes, 3rd-GoYaYas. The people's choice for sausage was 1st-Coon, 2nd-BC, 3rd- 3-way tie between Jambo, jeepfreak, and JR.
I also want to thank the judges that came out: Hillar Moore, Rudy Macklin, D-D Breaux, and Keila Stovall (Coach Stovall's d-i-l and VP of the Boys and Girls club). They enjoyed all the gumbo, and provided unbiased opinions on what they thought was the best gumbo (I'm a scientist so I made sure it was randomized).
We were able to raise over $500 for the Boys and Girls Club, and were able to donate 5 gal of gumbo, rice, and potato salad to the BR Battered Women's Shelter. All in all, a great charity event. Thanks again, and we hope to make this an annual event that continues to grow in size.

As mentioned above, it would probably be a good idea to move it to a day other than the day after Thanksgiving. Too many folks out of town and doing family things.

it would probably have done really well this coming saturday ..

Yeah, we were kind of limited to the days that were open for the Varsity during the fall. Hopefully next fall's gumbo contest will occur on a better day.
However, we are thinking of hosting a "Cajun Cookoff" during the spring, possibly in cooperation with the downtown bars. I'll keep everyone informed.

I want to do something that is wide open as opposed to strictly a gumbo, or jambalaya, or meat pie, cookoff. Something where not only taste but presentation and originality come into play.

Can you give an amateur some tips on how to make award winning chicken and sausage gumbo?

Don't burn the roux.
Use stock, not water.
Make the stock, don't buy it.
Go with smoked meats.

Definitely will hit the next one. You need to come our way in March for the Hogs for the Cause BBQ charity event! We're competing in that one!
