My FIL has a shite load of money but eats like a great depressioner. Regardless, we let er rip when he's paying.

Food is one of the few things I don't mind spending money on.

If you've any apprehensions, then yes, play it conservatively. Wait to see if they order an app before you do, and you may need to suffer through some free house wine. If you really want to order a fine bottle of wine, make a "trip to the restroom" and discretely order a bottle of wine on a separate check.

In-laws, business meeting...doesn't matter. If there's a host footing the bill, they call the shots.

I lean back and say:
"Give us a bottle of your finest champagne, five shrimp cocktails and some bread for my brother"

If someone is treating me to dinner, I'm going to order an entree in the same price range as theirs. For example, if my BF's parents are treating, I'm going to order a dish that's in the same price range as theirs. I'm not going to get the cheapest item on the menu but at the same time I avoid ultra expensive dishes.

Yep. Vegas is coming up in October and I have yet to care about or look up a single thing there except the restaurants I want to dine in, and the bars I want to visit.

I have yet to choose the place I want my birthday dinner to be at, but Aureole at Mandalay Bay is up there right now. That's probably where I'll end up.
