A few years ago there was a "Louisiana" restaurant in Ottawa, Ont - Bon Tons. It was OK, gumbo was good, had boudin, jambalaya, etoufee, blackened fish etc - they couldnt make it w/ just LA items so they had various fish and shrimp dishes.
It lasted a few yrs and then closed. Reminded me of the saying on how to make $1M ..... start w/ $5M open a restaurant for a few yrs and close it when you have $1M

The best seafood dishes I've eaten outside LA (and I'll expand that to MS Gulf Coast) are:
Grilled grouper sandwiches on the FL Gulf Coast
Shrimp and grits at Landings in Charleston
Shrimp poboy from BBs (not Pecks quality) but very good
Lobster bisque Pappadeaux's
Everything else has been ok to whoa. And I luv me some seafood.

By north if you mean Boston or Maine or Seattle, it's just a different kind of seafood and nothing they cook up there is seasoned
The exception may be steamed Mid Atlantic crabs. They traditionally load them up with Old Bay seasoning and makes them pretty spicy. I prefer this style of crab when compared to boiled.
Lobster and littleneck clams are awesome too, if a bit bland.
IMHO the seafood is better from the gulf.

Now if you try to tell me a steamed lobster is better than spicy boiled crawfish, there might be a visit to Sonic in your near future.
The steamed hams in Albany are hard to beat.
