Academy does stock Old Country pits which, if you get into the larger ones ARE 1/4" steel.
well the comment was referring to most box store smokers are thin and cost 199-399. But some might get more beefy smokers but it isnt THAT common. These 1/4" steel smokers will push 1k for basic features.

I got a shipping quote on this model, and it would be $850.00 to ship it near the Houma area.

Freight companies charge an arm and a leg if you don't have an account with them. I think our freight discount for having an account is around 80%. Do you have any friends or family that have a business that receives or sends out freight?

im kinda against verticals now that i have smoked on one a few times. i have had too much of the bark get wiped off from drippings from other meat before the maillard reaction happens. So i dont think i would buy a strictly vertical smoker.

Where are you located? Can I have it shipped to you?

I’ve used freightrate.com to hire shipments before. Pretty reasonable rates if you have a fork lift on both ends.

With as many fabricators as there are in Louisiana, have some lone build it for you. Smoker builder .com has plans and all the calculators to make sure the sizes work out correctly.

Look into Yoder smokers Yoder When doing research on this type of unit I came across them a few years ago. Still haven’t pulled the trigger on one, but I had my eye on a smaller Cheyenne or Wichita. I looks like they only make the loaded Wichita now which is disappointing. There used to be a regular Wichita which fit the price point between those two.

These folks are the official online retailers and while freight looks expensive depending on the model, nowhere near $850 All Things BBQ

Westlake, LA and I don't think it would be a problem. I think I'm on the other side of the state from you though.

They emailed me back
Said they use Basse for shipping.
That I may be able to get a cheaper rate from my source.

So how does that work. If I have a buddy that has freight account. They would set up that specific freight company to pick up the smoker and send it to their store?

Don't be afraid to make a drive. I have made the drive I think 5 times for smokers now. My last trip was 1600 miles round trip to Lubbock for the smoker below. It is my second reverse flow, other was a Shirley Fabrications trailer.

Lonestar Grillz is in Willis, TX, about 30 minutes north of Houston. I think they can ship to LA for about $300. I've had two of their smokers, they are better than anything around here but not fully custom imo. I plan on putting a deposit in on either another Evie Mae's or finally a Moberg here shortly.

I really don’t wanna make that drive hauling a big trailer with a 600lb smoker on way back

Give me a couple months and I may have my Evie Mae's for sale, that's a lot closer lol. Those Lyfetyme pits are way behind on technology/techniques used in smokers these days.

Other than the Yoder pellet grill, I wouldn't even look at a Yoder. They had to steal design changes from online message boards because their design was so poor. I can speak first hand from owning a Cheyenne. For that price a Lonestar Grillz 20" model is way better. Or if you don't mind spending $1900 that new Shirley model is great. My personal preference is not a cabinet model anymore after having 2.

What’s wrong with the lyfetyme design? Curious?

Personally, I wouldn't want to have to always draft all the way through the vertical section. You aren't seeing many custom builders who try to stay on the top still pulling from the top like their pits in the background. It's why LSG made a small top flow design that he tried to coin as "crossflow." If you look at my 24x48" pit you will see how it pulls from grate level to make an even draft across the whole pit. Even Shirley is experimenting with a new draw point on their new "prototype" 24x36.

I love smokers and cooking, so I may talk a lot. Sure you are wanting an offset? A lot of people use the insulated vertical cabinets with charcoal and wood chunks. Texas has the best pit builders. I've been all over the south buying pits, the locals like Boathouse are nice but look at small things like hinges, wheels, and you will see the differences.

Bandera
In your opinion, is this a piece of shit? The Oklahoma joe bandera
I’ve considered this option in the past, but This thing won’t last like the heavy duty pits I’m sure.

I think it all depends on what you are looking for. If you want something nice but not break the bank that design has been copied a lot so that should tell you that its a good design. First thing to decide is if you want a dedicated smoker or something that you can do both and what your budget is.

These at academy are pretty nice: Old Country Cabinet

Or you if you want a charcoal smoker/grill I have one of these that Assassin makes. I even got my employer to buy one, really nice and versatile. Have an insulated lid, also come with a v-pan with slots on one end for indirect/smoking.

I have a natural gas pit that I use when I just want to straight grill something convenient and quick.

I really like slow smoking briskets and Boston butts (currently use an electric smoker for that) and I love the smoke tower in my father in law suit off set, to cold smoke cheese, smoke sausage and jerky.

re: Does anyone know of a place in south Louisiana that sells heavy duty offset smokers like
For cold smoking I'd look at a cabinet style. If you don't want to have to put a log on the fire every 30-60 minutes and are used to set it and forget it types I'd definitely try a cabinet smoker first. I love offsets but they are definitely not for everyone.

There are a lot of builders, Stumps, Humphreys, Assassin, Lonestar Grillz. Maybe check those out, all depends on what your budget is.
