Crawfish Question- Shells

Bought some crawfish from this local place and the quality has steadily declined this season.
Past two weeks shells have been hard and brittle. Dark dark shells. Some parts look black. Full of poop. Some of the meat just looks not great.
Question before I start making accusations that this is a preparation issue and not just seasonal...because they gonna lose my business.
I've always thought shells got hard after Mothers Day when it been hot a while. I never had shells hard and brittle middle of the season.
Is it possible these people not washing the crawfish and over boiling them?
Place is in SWLA.

you bought them live or boiled??
Did they have all the legs??
If so, were the legs brittle??
Some cheaper/shittier establishments will freeze crawfish from the year before, then boil them... easy indicator is brittle legs... live bugs, freshly boiled this time of year should not be so hard... come july and August you can throw a live one through a window and itll crawl away... but not now... they should be perfect, not too soft, not too hard
Dark dark red shells says those bad boys are done for the year

I bought them boiled. Never considered they could have been frozen. It's like they boiled them too hot or something. Dark dark red shells.
They lost my business for good. John Mo's in Iowa, LA.
Not good.

It’s seasonal. Crawfish molt and eventually get hard this time of year.
