I've always thought cracklin were made as a way to have some food that will last without fridges back in the day (like through winter when there wasn't as much food.)

Any idea how long they can sit on my desk and still be good? I usually don't go longer than 2 weeks.

we bought them by the 55 gallon drums, left em out by the dog pen,(outside).. we used them to supplement the food, and to keep the dogs slick...
I would sneak a few, until I couldn't reach them down in the barrel.. I din't eat them when they got shovel deep..

Depends on what they are sealed in and where. Keep in cool temps in a good quality ziplock type bag and they will last a few weeks. They will go stale at some point if in contact with fresh air. Never had any go rancid on me. Never have any left to do so.

That's what I'm looking for. I guess it would take some time for that to happen

well things may have changed somehow... my father used to buy them somewhere by the truckload and we would load them in 55 gallon steel barrels and even aprox. 35 gallon, heavy cardboard oat barrels... these were huge, about the size of a medium size brim... they were a treat for the hunt'n dogs and a country farm boy too..

I have never had cracklin last more than 2 days. It's always gone by then.

Boiling meat in hog lard is a method of preserving meat that has been around for thousands of years and its use spreads all over the world.

55 gallons of cracklin?? Thats normally 9.99 a pound where I buy it.. How much does 55 gallons cost? Why would you feed it to dogs?

by the pickup truck load.. shovel into barrels.
i never knew how much they cost.. my father and grandfather were buying them in the 60's,,(1960,not 1860).. I think they bought them from a packing house... We fed them to the hunting dogs because they were dirt cheap,(had to be, or at least, cheaper than dog food) was a good supplement to scraps and dog food,,, and they were fatty, which kept the dogs hair nice, and slick...
