Clean it with hot water and a lightly soaped sponge. Dry it well, stick back on heat, squirt some oil, rub it out with paper towel and let sit on heat for a few minutes to cook in.
The misconception is that you can't use soap on cast iron. While this is partly true, you really would need to soap it up well to remove the oil and then you'd have to let it sit wet to rust.

Typically if I'm cooking steak or something like that, I'll deglaze the skillet with red wine after the meat comes off (this makes a killer jus/gravy and is super simple).
I do the same, but even if I cook something in my cast iron that doesn't make a good gravy or sauce I still put some water in there and turn the heat on to get everything cleaned off

I clean my cast iron no different than anything else, hot soapy water. Never do anything different except don't let it soak. Also you want to make sure to dry it off properly when you are done cleaning/ using it.
I'm sure if I didn't use soapy water it may be a little better, but I'd rather save the time and make sure its clean. Being doing this for 10+ years.

I would rather just go buy another one for $20.
If it's an inexpensive skillet run it through your oven's self cleaning cycle or toss it on a campfire. Then re-season it.

I have been working on a second post covering Roux for my Website Tableandlife.com. It will come in a few days, as soon as I can get the many- many photos culled down and ready. Here is a teaser.
Not a bad dark roux is it?
I may have discovered (once your skillet is clean) making a roux in the oven for about 4 hours may be the perfect way to (season) put a satin finish on your cast iron skillet.
