Do you think soapy water will clean off your baked on oil coating your vent hood? No way, you would have to scrub all day with abrasive pads to get that off. Well same for your cast iron. No way hot soapy water will even put a dent in it. Use soapy water (and a scraper, salt or whatever). The only thing that will hurt it is soaking in water too long, not drying it, or high oven temps >500, or too much acid (tomatoes, lemon, vinegar).

Lawd. It cast iron! Use whatever you want on it. I use stainless steel scouring pad with lots of soap, then a sponge with soap to make sure it’s clean. Then dry it with paper towels. When it needs a little oil on it I use a paper towel for storage. It’s not fine China. SMH
i'm w/ this guy. honestly i've stopped the ritual of seasoning twice a year because i've found even after the wife has left it in the sink and created rust spots, i just scrub it down and after a couple of weeks of heavy use (particularly bacon) it seems to reseason itself just fine.
and i can and do scrambled eggs in it all the time and have zero problem with sticking even w/ the heat cranked way up when i start (usually turn the burner off about 15 seconds after i pour the egg in) and it turns out flully and perfect and slides right out of the pan.

After use, I wipe my down with a dry paper towel, then while they are still warm I sprinkle some coarse salt in there and scrub them with another dry paper towel. That's how my mom and grandma always cleaned them. I rarely use water in them.
What do you do about the burnt on pieces of food that don't get removed that way and the little shreds of paper towel that get left behind in the pan?
