Can coffee grounds spoil?

My wife and I were in New Orleans in July and while there I picked up some coffee to bring back to L.A.
I got a bag of Luzianne Coffee and Chicory (Dark roast/white bag. It was delicious...just as good as I remember it).
I got one can of Cafe du Monde (yellow can, like tourists buy...it was meh)
And I got two bags of Community Coffee. One was the Hotel Blend and the other was "New Orleans Blend" coffee and chicory.
Both bags of Community coffee were undrinkable. The coffee grounds had turned a light brown color and had an off-putting smell. I can't really describe the smell. It wasn't rancid, but it was something approaching that. At any rate, both bags were tossed out.
So my question is, can coffee grounds spoil?
And fwiw, the expiration date on both bags was fine. They both expired at a point well into 2011.

Real Coffee drinkers buy beans and grind their own FWIW.
But to answer your question, Yes.
Freeze it in the future, especially if you are going to buy in bulk like that.

Was the seal compromised?
Unless it got wet, it shouldn't spoil aka rotten meat, but it air was able to get in and replace the nitrogen put in there, then it would oxidize and that would murder the flavor.
(And it is possible to make your own coffee/chicory blend that you put in your grinder you know.)

Maybe spoiled isn't the right word for what I'm trying to describe. But I've got a nose like a bloodhound and I know that something was off with that coffee. My daughter could smell it too.

Did you call CC to tell them about the incident? I'm sure they'd like to know just in case that happened to a whole batch? They would have probably sent you replacement coffee for your trouble.

How?

I don't do it myself, but my parents do.
Dunno the recipe, but I know it comes out pretty decent.
Only thing I can say is that they don't grind them together, but rather mix the fresh grounds by volume.

Won't do you any good, then.
Store them airtight or in the freezer. Sounds like maybe moisture AND air got in, though.
VOLVAGIA: Sounds like something worth getting from your parents and posting on this board. I'll bet others will be willing to try it, besides me.
