Bourbon Trail
Posted by HotTakes

Going to spend 3 days going around parts of the trail in March. Planning on hitting 12 distilleries during the tour. Probably gonna spend 1/2 day a Buffalo Trace. Any advice or tips? Made a makeshift pdf. Still need to book the places.

I’d skip Four Roses and go to Barton 1792 Distillery in Bardstown. I found the 4 roses distillery to be quite a letdown. I’m also not a fan of their bourbons either. But to each his own.

Thanks for that! Just googled it and their tours have been permanently closed since June 2022 :(

I would do Wild Turkey, the distillery itself is kind of industrial but the visitors center is very nice. I have been to Buffalo Trace a few times. I liked the heard hat tour, but they don’t take you in the warehouses on that tour, just do,the regular tour if that’s what you’re looking to do. I haven’t been since 2016, I can’t imagine the morons that go,there now. Since everyone is now a Bourbon connoisseur

On your first leg in louisville, Bulleit is a little outside of downtown in shivley. Kind of a shite hole part of Louisville. If you wanted to keep it all down town, michters, peerlees & old Carter all have attractions right there by your other stops. Rabbit hole is right on the other side of down town. And easy walk from say, angels envy

Bardstown Bourbon Company is putting out some good stuff. Their Fusion series is really good.
If you’re in Frankfort, Goodwood Brewery and Bourbon on Main are good places to grab lunch. Serafini
is pretty good for dinner in Frankfort but I would go to Lexington to Tony’s for a steak.
The KY State Capitol is a beautiful building to pass through as well.

I like four roses, and the pours were pretty heavy which was a good last stop for us. I didn’t really bother with doing the full tour at every stop besides a few; they are mostly the same.
I would do WoodFord early in the day because it’s a cool tour. Great property.

Have done trips to Louisville/Lexington the last 2 falls…your list is off to a good start.
Stitzel-Weller is a good spot 7-8 mins from the airport if you are flying in…see if there’s a Orphan Barrel tasting available, pricey but some solid pours.
Wild Turkey does Russell’s Reserve tastings which are excellent. Woodford might be one of the most well-rounded experiences, as is Maker’s. The grounds at Castle & Key/Old Taylor distillery are nice as well.
Heaven Hill’s new facility is awesome, and the bar has some exclusive pours you won’t find anywhere else.
If you need a lunch spot, The Stave is a good choice, and I recommend using Mint Julep Tours for a van/bus so no one has to do the driving. They can put together 3 or so distilleries for a day tour.
Also, there’s a bourbon bar called Neat which has some dusty pours (70’s-80’s Four Roses bottles, etc) and some hard to find bottles available for decent prices (Blanton’s Gold, etc). Definitely make time for that.
Have fun!
