Looking to make a deal with a couple who make salad dressings, including a Sensation salad dressing. They're making them at the LSU Ag Center's small business incubation program.

Name of the company is Hanley's.

Sensation Salads were/are a BR restaurant phenomenon. They say they're the first to sell it in bottles.

Shocking.

Kraft probably just googled the recipe for a lot cheaper.

The Blue Plate Plant in NO will custom make and bottle your recipe on a contract basis. I have been in that plant. Other than age, it was a legitimate prospect, since they buy their components n bulk and can quote you a good price. You would have to sell tons of product to make it yourself cheaper than they will do it for you.

They day we were there they were blending two custom products to bottle that afternoon. One Caesar Salad dressing and one French (that looked gross). Both were customer's blend recipes.

ICA, In Memphis will do any BBQ sauce or anything like that you want. Blended bottled, labeled, cases, you pick it up or they will ship to you. Their recipe or your recipe

ICA site.

It didn't beat out Landry's house dressing. It got a 69% rating. They needed at least 80% for Fertitta to make the switch.

He also didn't like their ranch dressing at all after 2 attempts to please him.

Anyone wanting to test the shelf stable bottled goods market can check out Edible Enterprises in Norco. Full commercial kitchen, bottling line, labeling equipment. It’s a nonprofit business incubator and can give assistance with marketing and distribution.

He hammered the taste of their Ranch pretty hard.

Also made their Bleu Cheese look pretty terrible.

I find sensation is just Cesar without the anchovies and the emulsified egg.

They sell primarily online; gross $250K last year, net $3K according to show. Billionaire Offered Hanley follow-up chef assistance to get the blend right. Good family and won't give up.

Damn—gross of $250K and netted $2K? That’s crazy. Either the product is crap, or they aren’t very good salespeople. I don’t really understand trying to compete in the shelf-stable packaged goods grocery business as a small scale food company: margins in grocery are razor thin, and you’re competing with the largest food companies in the world. Why not re-imagine the Sensation salad as a fresh/refrigerated product, and sell at local farmer’s markets and/or higher-end specialty food retailers? People will pay far more for a small-batch, preservative-free product sold directly to them by the producer at a farmer’s market. Throw in a hand-lettered label, an interesting bottle, and a few salespeople with personality/food knowledge.....of course, that’s not scaleable. You’re going to plateau according to local markets’ shopper traffic.

I work a market selling bread, and I have seen various packaged goods people come and go over the years. Grandma’s spaghetti sauce, various salsas, BBQ sauces, dipping sauces/condiments, etc. All were decent enough products, but not sufficiently interesting/amazing to generate a following, or to differentiate from the many competitors on supermarket shelves. All seemed to think they were on the cusp of major success through grocery store distribution.....I can’t think of a single one that actually made it to anything other than semi-regional distribution.

I wonder how profitable the Cousin’s dressings are?

Even Cousin's dressings were changed to give longer shelf life, but they're still refrigerated.
