It's a shame BR has so few good local restaurants. That's all I'm saying.
Baton Rouge has many good local restaurants. However, they are not close to the class of restaurants available in New Orleans. And New Orleans is close enough that residents of Baton Rouge desiring a fine dining experience are willing to drive to New Orleans where the tourists help support high quality ($$$$$) restaurants.

Savannah is a tourist Mecca with the anti-bellum structures and Paula Deen and such.

Tourism is big for sure, but I wouldn't say a Mecca.

BR is 3 times as big and has a major university.

There is an Outback right on Bay Street for the tourists though.

more than around BR?

I have not been to her restaurants yet. Heard they are pretty good actually.

The seafood place on the way to Tybee, which is her brother's place, Uncle Bubbas is astoundingly mediocre. I'd still go there though because it sits right on the marsh. Very nice.

The argument that tourism is the driver for having great restaurants and food in general.

Ah Gotcha.

Savannah is not in the great category yet, but it is on the way up.

And per capita I think it is pretty good.

I see Savannah as a little different class of people from much of the rest of the South, as well as I do many other places in the eastern coastal areas of the South. I think they are ripe for great food, and in many places, it's already well on its way up. Asheville for instance really is a Mecca, and if I were going to move to a place where I would open up a serious restaurant in the South, that would be very high on the list of places that it would be successful.
