Not recent but I've been there twice in the past. First time both my wife's entrée and mine were way over salted. I went with friends a second time and all the courses were excellent. I had the porcheta special.

Never had a bad meal there. Be aware that Magazine is closed just to the east of the restaurant.

Steak Tartare, Charred Octopus (to start) and I've had the Lasagna, Bucatini and Fish, all which were good.

I just moved in 2 weeks ago about a block from AVO.
I went last Sat to try and eat. Sat at the bar (only person at the bar) and ordered a drink. Since the bartender never even asked if I was interested in food, I saw menu at the corner of the bar and proceeded to look over. 20 minutes goes by (10 minutes with an empty glass) and he doesn't even come over to ask if I want another drink or food after he clearly saw me looking at the food. After I waved him down, I closed out and went eat at Saba.
It was a huge disappointment for my first experience walking into the place. I will definitely try again to actually eat the food but it will be after a few other places now. I hope you have a good experience and would love to hear on Monday how it went.

I've only been for their Happy Hour, but it's really solid. Monday thru Thursday, 4-6pm. Good drinks and appetizers. Service and food was decent enough to warrant a trip back for a full meal.

AVO is pretty good but I would not put it on radar when when thinking about going uptown for dinner.

Watermelon Salad
Market Fish
Squid Ink Linguine
other things that are either not on the menu anymore or were a special, like the pork chop.

I liked it. People who like large portions won't like it because of that. We had a couple in our party who wouldn't go back because of portion size but they enjoyed the food they had. Just a fair warning if such things bother you.

I brought my girlfriend there a few months back. Overall we enjoyed the place. We had the octopus and some crab dish. I can't remember the entree but the atmosphere and service was nice.
DO NOT get the Caesar salad. It's two long pieces of romaine lettuce with charred, pretty much black, croutons. Worst caesar salad I have ever had.
