HUDSON, Fla. (CBS12) — In a bizarre and disturbing act of retaliation, a Pasco County man was arrested after admitting to killing and cooking two of his own pet peacocks — all to send a message to a neighbor who was feeding them.
According to the arrest affidavit filed by the Pasco Co. Sheriff's Office, Craig John Vogt, 61, admitted to killing and cooking the birds to send a message to a neighbor who had been feeding them against his wishes.
On Sept. 23, deputies responded to Vogt’s residence on Michael Drive in Hudson, where they were informed that Vogt had placed a letter in a neighbor’s mailbox stating he had killed the birds because of the continued feeding.
When questioned, Vogt confirmed to authorities that he placed the letter and admitted to killing the birds out of spite. He described cutting their necks with a knife, bleeding them out, and cooking them in a frying pan. Post-Miranda, Vogt reiterated his actions and stated that upon release, he intended to kill the remaining peacocks to prevent anyone from taking custody of them.

Authorities booked Vogt into the Land O’ Lakes Detention Center for aggravated animal cruelty, a third-degree felony, citing that he intentionally inflicted unnecessary pain and suffering resulting in the cruel death of the animals.
According to the affidavit, no firearms or other property were seized during the arrest. Vogt was not affiliated with any gang, was not listed as a sexual offender, and was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the incident.
The case is pending further investigation, and Vogt is expected to appear in court on a future date.
