Anybody ever microwave pieces of an onion?

So I come home from work and my wife had made chili and she does not like onions in hers. So I thought I would dice up a few small pieces and throw them in the microwave to warm them a little and dump them in my chili.
It looked like a fireworks show in my microwave. Never knew they would do that until now.
Probably screwed up the magnetron but it looked cool.

white onion or red onion? (sounds like you did white)
Today, I nuked the remnants of a sandwich I bought last night and included three big beautiful rings of red onion, with no fireworks.

Wouldn't worry much about that. Onions are chock full of water and it was likely just water turning to steam and popping that did that.
Your microwave is fine.

No, it was actually sparks. Looked like you put aluminum foil in there. Supposedly it is the high mineral content of the onion that does it.

Any vegetable high in iron will do that. Try putting green beans in a bowl and microwaving them while you watch. Fourth of july
