As far a brown ale goes, nothing beats Newcastle IMO.

Now, I know Sierra Nevada is not that great on a whole, but their Torpedo IPA is the best for the money, IMO. It isn't complex like a Chouffe, but it's a nice readily available beer.

Nice list though.. Been to Oktoberfest in München?

ETA: I was fortunate enough to try Terrapin's Oak Aged Big Hoppy Monster at The Ravenous Pig in Winter Park, Fla, aged with French oak spirals for two months. I think it's technically a red ale, but needless to say, it was marvelous.

Yeah, we went to Oktoberfest back in '05. Had a great time. And as touristy as it is, I loved the Hofbrau House. Then again, I really like Hofbrau beer. We had Spaten in our tent though, so it's hard to complain. Those Germans impress me. I never saw any trash on the grounds the whole time we were there. I did see a few guys fall down and one guy puke, but no trash.

The Westmalle dubbel does have that slight grape tinge to it. It's supposed to taste that way. Oddly enough, if you get a really fresh German lager, you pick up a little of that same taste.

I had the chance to have Dogfish Head's Chicory Stout this weekend. It is top notch. I am becoming a huge fan of their beers and wish they were distributed into LA.

Neither did I. And I swear the toilets at Oktoberfest somehow were the cleanest public toilets I've ever seen. I'm not sure how they do it. Best party I've ever been to.

I haven't had the Chicory, but I picked up a 120 minute, Raison D'etre and the Aprihop at Chan's in Destin. The 120 was intense. You wanna talk about a ride, put down a few of those (if your wallet can handle it!).

German efficiency. When I first walked into the Hofbrau House and sat down at that huge table, the waiter, the one waiter the table had, brought me a beer. I thought, this is great, but I'll never get another one because he's waiting on about 75 people. I never finished a litre before he was back asking me if I needed another one.

I split one of these tonight with my brother. I enjoyed it a whole lot...I think I'd even put it at the top of my favorite beers.

As far as the brown ale goes, I have to disagree with the Nola Brown Ale and the Lazy Magnolia version. Both beers leave a terrible after taste for me. Although its practically mainstream, Newcastle is just too smooth to leave off this list IMO.

Honorable mention goes to Rogue’s Hazelnut Brown.

have you had it on tap? it doesn't compare to what you get in the bottle. and what about dogfish head india brown ale? i'll put those 2 against anything you've got.

I finally got around to trying the Vanilla Porter. I have come to the conclusion that I am only a fan of vanilla when it is ice cream. It was not my favorite.

Agreed...Paulaner Hef is my favorite draft in the world. Fortunately, the Chimes has it on tap at the moment!
