I recall a topic here not too long ago with lots of calculus around this.

Assuming you need room for the little potatoes, the corn cobs, and some sausage, how many pounds of shrimp can you do without running out of water and volume? How much water to start with?

I like to do small batches and have a 5 gallon pot I use to boil shrimp in.

I will put 2 1/2 gallons of water in the pot and that gives me more than enough room to add onion, celery, garlic, lemon, corn, potatoes, sausage, mushrooms, seasoning and 5 lbs. of large shrimp with room to spare.

I could probably do 7 lbs. in that pot without any issue.

Damn, that's WAY more water than needed to boil that little amount of shrimp. In my above post I use only 10 qts. of water to boil 5 lbs. of large shrimp and could easily boil at least a couple pounds more with no problem.

I just did this last Sunday, so it's not like I'm guessing.

Well I was assuming potatoes, corn, and sausage was going in it also.

Well, read my first response again. I did onions, celery, garlic, potatoes, sausage, corn, mushrooms and 5 lbs. of large shrimp using 2 1/2 gallons (10 quarts) of water in my 5 gallon pot and could have put about 2 more lbs. of shrimp in there if I wanted.

Gotcha

Mushrooms are always the underdog in shrimp or crawfish boils

And I mean that, not just because of my screen name

You could easily do 10-15lbs

Shrimp are about 1 pound per quart.

I should have double-checked and explained myself better. I looked at the pot and its at 20 guarts I put it at. Last time I boiled, I did 6 lbs of shrimp for 4 of us. I have 2 sons in high school who are garbage disposals, so I add more corn, sausage, and potatoes than your average person.

Not sure where I got 20-24 from but once I looked at pot, 20 is big and bold and that’s where I get it it at. Not denying it’s more than normal but it was good.

Hell, I did 5 lbs. for 3 of us, and 2 of them are females. I also had the equivalent of 4 ears of corn cut in pieces, 2 lbs. of smoked sausage, 2 lbs. of new potatoes, 1 lb. of mushrooms.

We had about 1 lb. of shrimp left over that we picked to use in omelets over the next 2 days and we just picked on the corn, mushrooms, sausage and potatoes for 3-4 days afterwards.

I know all about teenage boys and seafood---------or any food they like for that matter. They can be human vacuum cleaners when in their feeding frenzy.
