A shipyard in Morgan City is flooded after a breach in their levee Wednesday night. There's about four feet of water filling up the shipyard right now. They have a bulkhead surrounding their shipyard that stands at about 10 feet. But officials were saying there would be about 13 feet of water. So workers stayed after normal work hours to try and save their yard from the rising flood waters by adding about 2,000 sandbags at 3,000 pounds each on top of the bulkhead. But a leak started at around 5 pm yesterday. Despite crews efforts, the levee broke and the shipyard was under about four feet of water by 10:00 last night. Production at Swift Ships continued today since they were able to lift and elevate the hulls just in case the levees did break. Jim Ducker, the Chief Operations Officer at Swift Ships said they spent probably as much time preparing to stay in production as they did to prepare the yard. They hope to continue production even with the flooding for at least another month.

Yeah that sucks. I heard about that last thursday at a Society of Naval Architects meeting. The Morgan City area has quite a bit of oil and gas infrastructure that is being affected by the river. Thankfully the Houma area hasn't been affected.
