Just looking at some pics emailed to my boss and can't help but think of the potential environmental problem on Bateman Island in Morgan City. U.S. Liquids maintains an oil field waste disposal site there with open pits filled with used drilling fluids. Doesn't look like it would take a whole lot to over top there and cause some problems. Anyone know how high the containment is on those pits?

Depends on what it is. Main ingredient in drilling mud is barite. Not all that toxic. If it is oil based mud, then you have that problem if it spills. Any other drilling fluids are almost by definition heavier than water. Whatever it is, it probably will stay low unless it is washed out.

The solution to pollution is dilution.

Definitely have oil. They skim the tops of the pits every so often and sell it. I used to survey barges coming into their other site in Grand Bois.

I thought Grand Bois handled a different material....it could be the same...it's never been a issue for anyone in MC...even with hurricans heading straight there.

While they are run by the same company, different sites accept different material. Some sites can't accept hazardous waste. I know the Grand Bois site does becasue I have hauled some in there before but haven't been to that location. But just becasue it's the same company doesn't mean that they accept the exact same things in different locations
