I've been using Adobe Photoshop 7.0 but it seems the free Gimp program and paint.net are more popular. I've installed Gimp an tried it little but before I dive in, which of these are most effective? Would it be better to go with paint.net?

Photoshop is the Cadillac. It is the most powerful. The only drawback is it is expensive. If you have access to it, use it.
GIMP and Paint.net are freeware. That might be why they seem to be used more often. If it can be done with GIMP or Paint.net, it can be done (probably better) with Photoshop. I answer Paint.net questions because that is what I use. You can bet I would PS exclusively, if I had the program.
There are many tutorials for PS online.

Question: How do you guys make text disappear in a pic? example: the club-footed deer pic (deer camera I think) had the date and time on it. You all took that away and then did your thing to the pic. All I know to do is color match, which usually doesn't look that good and you can tell what was done. I guess I'm asking are you cutting and pasting over the text or what?
thanks,
VTdad.

Use the clone tool to copy from one area of the image to another. The deer pic is a pretty simple one. The timestamp on the photo is mostly over dried pine needles. Just choose a part of the image that has lots of dried pine needles as your source and clone it over the text part. Same thing with the portion that is over the tree trunk. Just be a little more precise there.
I searched for a good tutorial for you and this one should work: LINK
Also keep in mind the clone tool uses the brush. So you can control size, shape, edge and opacity as well.
Master the clone tool and it will take your farking to another level.

What do you use to extract an image from a video? Also, what do you suggest to use to make animated GIFs?
I'm wanting to extract images from the end of the LSU-Kentucky 2002 game with frat boy's jaw dropping when he realized they actually lost :)

I generally use...
keepvid to save YouTube videos.
AVS to convert, edit, extract frames, etc.
Adobe ImageReady to make GIFs.

I use GIMP for my gifs.
You need GIMP GAP that you can pick up at gimp.org
I find a YouTube video and use
Bender Converter (gives you one free convert a day) to convert to AVI. Save to computer.
In GIMP go to
video>split video and frames>extract video
once it's loaded I pick the frame range I would like to use and re-upload only choosing the video range I want and close the other window. Then begin edit. Once finshed I save as a .gif

My sig is technically my first fark. I've done avatars and sigs for people in the past so I know how to fool around in photoshop some. But I'm nowhere nearly as good as some of the farkers here. Here to learn!

This thread pretty much attracts people who contribute (or want to contribute) to the board (I wouldn't think the lurkers spend too much time in it).
If you start your own thread or post in an existing one (very much encouraged by the experts) you'll probably have a much more visible piece. Constructive criticism will happen anywhere you ask for it/mention you're new.
I'd suggest that, if you've finished a fark you're happy with, put it in its own thread (or if you're responding to an idea, in that thread). If you run into difficulty with the process involved, this is a great place to come for questions (and a damn good answer). I haven't been here terribly long, (and I'm nowhere near the best when it comes to using the programs or producing the results), but I've never experienced "bashing" for an attempt. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work- the Osama gif was pretty funny
