I was wondering about the shoes myself:
1. Maybe they don't wear shoes normally
2. They wanted to touch the field with their bare feet
3. They think it makes them run faster

I think they're flip-flop types and chucked them to run faster. Ridiculous, still.

That's right on the money. They had crocs and had to ditch em for maximum speed and balance.
