It was very clear in the settings. It was simply wrong. It said it went to points in the case of 3 teams having the same record and unequal amounts of games. That condition was met and then it simply did not go to points. It went to a hybrid of points and head-to-head. There was no lack of clarity. The league was played by rules completely different than the ones that teams had access too.
As explained in the email, the league manager had the power to manually set the playoff teams. He could have done so to reflect the rules that all 12 played the season with access too. He chose not to do so and keep Vanillas money instead. Its a hose job.

I'm not reading vanilla's multiple page melt. Does he have a legit gripe or is he just a sore loser? are there nefarious things going on in this league?

Just read the list of rules I just posted and look at the final regular league standings. Decide for yourself. You don't have to go back to the other pages. Vanilla was 2nd amongst the 3 in head-to-head and 2nd in points. Somehow it went points to break the 3 way tie and THEN back to head to head. Despite it not saying anything about that and clearly saying it would go to points to break a tie in the case that 3 teams had the same record and different amounts of games between them(a condition that was met).
Of course the 6th seed OG who shouldn't be in as per the rules thinks everything was in order.
And this isn't a biased interpretation. It was stated in this message by other posters that Vanilla Ice had clinched. Because he had based on the rules that were posted and accessible to all members.

At what point do we just remove him from the league on there? He's in consolation bracket anyway. Those guys should be barred from making moves (most leagues have this written or unwritten rule).
