It's easy
Click LM Tools
The "edit rosters" to the right
Leave it on "add player", then select the team you want to add to, check perform as league manager, then submit.
Search player and click add.
Done

I also check "Don't Count As A Transaction" but I'm not sure if that matters for Period 1.
