I always see recommendations of staying about 1800 calories when trying to drop weight. If I’m in ketosis and utilizing fat as a fuel, does the calorie count really matter? If I went 1200 calories a day, wouldn’t I just be utilizing more of my own fat?

From my understanding, the more fat you intake through food, the ketones will break those down first. Therefore, if you eat more calories and fat is in those calories, your body will burn those first. So if by lowering your calories you naturally lower your fat intake.

The calorie deficit is really all that matters. Your calorie goal is dependent on your current weight and how fast you want to lose weight. Multiply your weight by 12.75 and subtract 500-1000 (1lb/week - 2lb/week) from that. That’s your daily calorie goal.

If you eat less, yes you will burn more body fat and therefore lose more weight. For most people is generally unsustainable to eat that little bit of calories for a long period of time, but you do you

I'm not sure how you can eat that many calories maintaining a strict keto diet. I stay around 1200 calories myself. I don't do any strenuous exercise though, just walk and lately I'm not holding up that end as much. It's pretty easy to maintain a calorie deficit and stay away from almost all carbs by eating grilled meat and not cheating.

I think the 1800 calorie recommendation is to keep people from 'starving' themselves and dying. I do all I can to eliminate carbs so while I'm 'allowed' 20 carbs or so, I usually am around <10 a day. I found it impossible to eat that many calories they recommended. But still feel great and have lost down to my goal. Grilled meat is satisfying and fulfills about every category except the extra calories. Then cheese or macadamia nuts for the fat.

This completely neglects a person’s daily calorie burn.
