I know recruiting wasn’t as accurate in 99 as it is today, but he did get the #1 class; has to be at least a top 10 class nowadays. So even during a bad two year period he was getting great players. I never watched him bc I was born in 98 but he must’ve been a good recruit

Yet he couldn't field a receiver after a purse snatcher got suspended.

Both hired bad assistants. DiNardo because he had no money and 0 because he doesn't know what he is doing.

All coaches have to hire assistants. Sometimes they work out, sometimes they don’t. Last year they worked out. So what is it you’re saying!?

he made some terrible coaching hires

That is certainly true- it's as if he hired replacements that were inferior to the ones that left! Hiring your buddies never ends well...
Some will say LSU did not have that big of a budget in those days, but still, not like Dinardo was really pushing for any big time coaches.

The Tepper defense his first full year was God awful, but improved the second year (Dinardo’s last year). The offensive coordinator hire as mentioned in another reply was worse than the Tepper hire. The problem was 2 bad seasons in a row because of poor hires at the coordinator positions. And don’t forget the coach started his own restaurant in BR. Perhaps losing focus on his real job.

Does this sound familiar?

It’s a bit more complicated that this.

You summed it up very well. But on a side note... Dinardo also jinxed himself by putting his name on that restaurant on highland road (I moved away from BR 15 years ago but I think it’s currently Ruffino’s). Back then that location/building had the reputation of being a failure and a graveyard for every restaurant owner that dared to operate out of it. So when “Dinardo’s” opened for business it was the beginning of the end for Gerry. ;-)
