I am up to about 4 or 5 of each

1977 SW - original
1977 SW - despecialized edition
1977 SW - 4K
1977 SW - 35mm negativeland remastered
1977 SW - 1080p

1980 ESB - despecialized edition
1980 ESB - 4K
1980 ESB - adywan revisited <-- worth it just for the battle of hoth
1980 ESB - 35mm negativeland remastered
1980 ESB - 1080p

more info on these..

quote:

The Revisited releases differ from the Despecialized Editions in that the goal isn’t just to get as close to the original versions of the film as possible, but to improve them using original photography and effects work.

How as all this done? New models were created for this version of the film, with certain shots “upgraded” significantly using a variety of methods. The aim is to produce something that’s closer to “what the special editions should have been,” according to the official page.

You can check out an extensive list of changes if you’re curious. This is an interpretation of Empire Strikes Back that attempts, as much as possible, to stay true to the original film while “fixing” many of the effects. The color grading has also been adjusted, along with certain fixes for continuity errors.

The result is a film that may be more subjective than definitive, but that offers a fascinating and often superior experience to the official releases and many of the existing fan edits. This is a big deal for Star Wars fans who have been following this project for years.

I'm finally going to have a SW original trilogy marathon and compare all the different versions.

Would love to discuss the merits and video-retouching quality of the various types.

What's your favorite?

Original VHS.
Special Edition VHS.
Original DVD.
Original Bluray.

I've been meaning to get the despecialized versions, but haven't got around to it yet.

I assume you know that movies 1-6 and Rogue One are being released on 4K bluray on 3/31.

I'll buy 4-6 and Rogue One now then wait for the others to go on sale. I might buy 7-9 when they are a $1 lol

i have a 4K copy of 1977 SW remastered from the 35mm print at the moment so it will be interesting to compare that to the new 'official' one.

With the addition of HDR and Dolby Atmos I'd assume it would be worth the upgrade.

Fyi, here's The Digital Bits review of ANH:

He even says:

And for those of you who pine for that theatrical experience, the enterprising fans behind the cherished 4K77 will almost certainly use this disc’s improved image to create the ultimate version of it for you.

I had a copy of the first pay-cable versions of Star Wars/Empire/Jedi on a VHS tape recorded at SLP. I'd put that sucker on and let it play in the background as I worked around the house. I miss having that shitty tape.

Is Harmy involved with the Revisited?

Because I can be okay with his Despecialized versions forever.

The Star Trek (TOS) remastered gives me hope this can be better than okay, but I reserve judgment. Remember, we've gotten an "enhanced" version from Lucas himself. The fact we didn't lap up that hot piss and pretend it was champagne has hurt him deeply, personally (but not financially).

I figured there would be more interest in this thread with the quarantine going on. What better time to check out all the flavors of SW?

Just learned about the Revisited version of ESB yesterday and just got finished watching it in full. Blown away at how seamless the new additions were, the battle of Hoth sequence, and the clean up. The immense sense of the asteroid field was startling. This was the special edition we deserved.
