What’s the story on the Galaxy Quest f-bomb?

Sigourney Weaver and Tim Allen encounter “the chompers.” Weaver’s character says “Screw that.” But the line has clearly been overdubbed, as Weaver clearly said “frick that.”

Obviously, the MPAA and/or studio came down hard and forced the edit. But is this the strangest instance of an intentional f-strike in a movie? In all other aspects of the movie, it is clearly, at most, a hard PG movie.

To include an f-bomb in the movie is possibly the most jarring tonal shift in a movie I’ve ever seen.

In addition, it’s also jarring that they could not get Sigourney Weaver and Tim Allen back to just redo that one shot.

Was the movie originally intended to be a PG-13/R rated movie?

Yes. I think it's talked about on the DVD commentary that it was originally supposed to be more adult oriented w/a hard PG 13 rating but was edited down to PG after test screenings.

Another part cut around that scene was a short bit with Weaver seducing a pair of aliens and tricking them into getting crushed which is why her top is suddenly zipped down much further.

Tony Shalhoub's character was supposed to be a drug addict which is why he is carrying around the bag of "candy" and is acting spaced out for most of the movie.

Sigourney was almost fiddy filming that flick.

It costs a lot of money to come back and change one word.

Okay, at the very least, they should have anticipated the edit and just did one or two takes with Sigourney saying "Screw that" during the initial shoot.

This movie is all kinds of awesome. Besides this and Scream, I can’t think of anything else that so brilliantly spoofs a genre.

On a related note, I recently got a Vacation DVD set and watched European Vacation for the first time in forever.

In it, Beverly D'angelo gets pissed at Chevy and screams "Forget you!" She later says she regrets saying the F word in front of the family.

My question is did she say frick in the theatrical version, or is my dvd correct?
