I would get him a .308. Soft kick, versatile, and ammo is easy to find under normal conditions. IF recoil is a concern, shoot on a sled. I taught my boys proper eye relief and have never had a problem with recoil. Id let my 11 year old shoot mag calibers just to see the look on his face.
