I pulled the trigger and got a Mavic Mini with fly more for prime day. I'm new to the auto hovering drone market. Is it me or is the mini's flying distance awful? If there are any trees in the area, it seems like I can't get over 1100ft even at 200' high.

I did finally achieve around 3000' but still nowhere near what I see in videos. I've calibrated the compass each time, but noticed my arrow and location of the drone on my phone (center bottom of screen) are totally wrong. Like over 90degrees wrong.

Did I get a screwed up drone? or has anyone had any experiences like this? I've tried city flying AND out on a large tract of land where there is NO wifi interference guaranteed.

Hey, I got a good idea, let’s ask how to break the FAA flight restrictions on the internet. Lol

No restrictions were broken. Below 400' and line of sight. I'm doing a distance towards a spotter so think again there drone cop.

Clearly.

None of this was in your OP.

Nowhere in your post do you describe how you were being restricted. Did the drone simply halt at distance/altitude and not respond to control inputs? Did you get any messages from the App? Did you properly deploy the antennas? Were you flying in any type of restricted zone? Did you validate your satellite counts? Check Kp values?

Yeah, being isolated is no guarantee of zero interference.

I get a signal strength message then an immediate loss of contact with controller with automatic RTH. Nothing restricted. Antennas flat front side towards drone. 15 sats.

No idea about the Kp values. I'll have to look that up. I think I figured out the whole position of drone thing on the app as to needing to calibrate my phone compass or interference from the controller.

Several possibilities

1. Bad cable between controller and phone. Try another cable and/or phone. Could also be a damaged port on the controller.

2. Interference is present. You can use the app to show you the presence or absence of interference. By default, the controller is set to switch if there is interference. In reality, you can get better connections and performance by checking the app and manually setting the connection. This is how DJI establishes their range stats, manually configured connections in lab conditions.

3. Calibrate the IMU(you said you did the compass, I'd do both)

4. Turn off caching or clear all caches.

5. Set your phone to airplane mode when flying. Can also turn off updates and bluetooth.

6. Are you using a micro-sd card in the mavic? Remove it. Bad card can cause issues but it's rare.

1. Range in city/suburbs is rough. Home WiFi interferes with connection between controller and mini.

2. Even in the country, you will be hard pressed to clear 1 mile under 400 feet. Actual line of sight is a factor in connection.

3. The YouTube videos you see are people that are reallly stretching the capabilities with no regard to possibly losing the drone that was given to them. I am a somewhat seasoned flier and I would not put my drones in a lot of the situations that I see on YouTube.

4. The videos on YouTube are often done in perfect flying conditions. That one guy flies in Hawaii from the slope of a mountain and has perfect descending line of site for miles. That is the ideal condition for max range.

5. The best I have gotten out of my mini is just a little over a mile in the country but I admit, it was out of LOS and **cough** exactly 400’ high. In my defense, it was over my woods so if it crashed, it would be on my property with nobody at risk.
