The poorest people in America live better than literally billions of people on this earth, while having access to more opportunities to get out of that “poverty” than anyone else on earth.

But they are the real victims and are being held down by the evil *insert latest boogie man*

What do you think they should be doing? It seems to me they can't do anything efficiently, so they should probably do less and take less from us, the taxpayers.

The issue is that major expenses like housing, healthcare, and education have experienced dramatic increases in cost for certain people. It obviously depends on the market and the individual though. Ultimately, an increase in household income is only as good as what kind of life it affords you. We all benefit from things like cheaper electronics, but what about the major stuff that eats up more of your income? Some are doing better in that sense, but I think that's far less universal.

Good points. It's why just slapping numbers on everything doesn't tell you the whole story.

Anything around $150k or lower and you can be dead broke pretty easily.

You can also have a very solid wealth profile with that income if you aren’t a dumbass.

Save, invest and don’t be frivolous.

And also privatized government services and cut regulations like a mad man

The Carter administration deregulated the airlines and long haul trucking. He doesn't get enough credit for that.
